For children with cochlear implants, regular assessments perform the dual functions of setting baseline performance and recording progress over time. Data collection by the cochlear implant center team on any one child’s performance contributes to tracking group outcomes as well as noting an individual’s progress after implantation. This presentation describes instruments used by implant centers in the areas of speech perception and speech and language development. Case study examples illustrate the nature of information reported by center assessments. Recommendations of the types of evaluation tools that might be more appropriate in educational settings and that may more directly inform habilitation are also provided.
