This presentation examines the underlying issues inherent in the question, “How much therapy does a child with a cochlear implant need?” General premises that should be assumed are discussed, and a “best practice model” for individualizing therapy services is described.

Course Objectives:
- Participants will be able to identify the rates of language and academic progress necessary to achieve participation in a mainstream educational setting.
- Participants will be able to compare and contrast roles of service providers in planning habilitation for a child with a cochlear implant.
- Participants will be able to outline two criteria that define a “best practice model” of intervention for a child with a cochlear implant.
- Participants will be able to assign rankings to the factors that influence the necessary intensity of a child’s habilitation program.
