This talk reviews advantages of bilateral cochlear implantation and why it should be considered. Children who would be considered as candidates for bilateral implantations and the outcomes that may be achieved are discussed. The major emphasis of the talk focuses on the development of auditory skills utilizing bilateral cochlear implants. Specific goals and how to incorporate the auditory development in school and at home are also discussed.

  • Participants will be able to list at least three benefits of bilateral cochlear implantation.
  • Participants will be able to identify appropriate candidates for bilateral cochlear implantation.
  • Participants will be able to describe auditory goals on which to focus while utilizing the bilateral cochlear implant alone.
