This presentation describes the requisite listening, speech, and language skills for children with cochlear implants in mainstream preschool settings, the needs of children using cochlear implants in mainstream education settings, the challenges faced by families as their children transition out of early intervention and into schools, and what schools can to do to provide an appropriate education for these children under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Course Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to list the child and setting factors in mainstreaming a child with hearing loss.
  • Participants will be able to describe the types of assessment and management services that should be included on the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for a child with a cochlear implant.
  • Participants will be able to provide a rationale for a mainstream educational placement.
  • Participants will be able to list the benefits and limitations of a mainstream preschool placement for a child with a cochlear implant.
